LEXINGTON, KY--Kentucky coach John Calipari has had enough of John Wall’s “frustration” and on Monday decided to send a message to the talented freshman. The message? If Wall doesn’t “shape up” he will be forced to attend classes, do his own homework, and take his own tests, like many other players on the team.

In a press conference Tuesday, Calipari insisted he was merely trying to help the youngster.

“I'm just trying to help John stay focused and be the best player he can be,” said Calipari. “Lately he's been showing a little immaturity, and that's to be expected. But if it continues, we may have to take punitive measures like having him start attending classes and doing his own homework. I know it sounds draconian, but sometimes a little tough love is in order.”

Calipari said that doing schoolwork can build character and instill a sense of discipline and responsibility in a player.

“It can, at times, be a very valuable teaching tool,” he said. “It’s a character-builder. That said, it’s a last resort. We don’t want to have to send John, or any of our stars, to class unless it’s absolutely necessary. Lord knows they didn’t come here to go to class, and we wouldn't want to end up getting complaints from parents.”

After practice on Tuesday, Wall reiterated that he had no problem with Coach Calipari and vowed to keep his mouth shut in the future.

“I love Coach Calipari. You all know that,” said Wall. “And I know he's upset with me . But Jesus, did he have to play the ‘going to class’ card? That's pretty harsh. I guess he’s trying to light a fire under me. Well, consider it lit. I'm a star athlete on an elite college basketball team. Going to class, like many other things, is not in my vocabulary.”

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart downplayed Calipari’s statements, saying there was “little to no chance” that Wall would be required to attend class.

“I just wanted to pour a little water on all the controversy here,” said Barnhart. “Just to clarify: There is little to no chance that John Wall will be required to go to class. I’m sure Coach Calipari was just trying to motivate his player. He is a master motivator. He even motivated me to put aside my moral integrity and hire him. Okay, that’s actually pretty easy to do since I’m an athletic director at a Division I school.”
