NEW ORLEANS--The New Orleans Saints today tried to lift the spirits of the British Petroleum company by announcing they are dedicating their 2010 season to the beleaguered oil giant. BP has fallen on hard times as of late as it tries to stop the flow of oil gushing from a damaged rig. “We know that British Petroleum is going through some tough times right now,” said quarterback Drew Brees. “This is an unprecedented disaster and they'vebeen saddled with the task of cleaning it up. Hopefully we can win some games and give them something to smile about through this trying time.” Brees said he has faith in the people of British Petroleum and that knows the billion dollar oil giant will someday rise again. “You can’t keep this company down for long,” said Brees. “They’re too resilient, too hard working, too tough to be defeated by this. They will rise again, and every Sunday when the New Orleans Saints take the field, the fine folks at British Petroleum will know that we’re playing for them. Make no mistake: today we are all oil barons!” As part of their support for British Petroleum, the Saints will be sporting BP patches on their helmets and jerseys and accepting donations s from fans who want to help the oil company. A group of players will also travel to BP corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas and assist the executives in their efforts to formulate an effective public relations strategy. For coach Sean Payton, it’s another opportunity for the team to give back. “This is just a great chance for us to once again give something back,” he said. “What those poor people are going through right now is unthinkable. The tar balls, the dead fish, the oil slick, the gross-looking shit all over those pelicans – it’s a public relations nightmare. That’s why we’re standing shoulder to shoulder with them during this massive shitstorm.” British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward, sporting a Drew Brees game jersey, told reporters today that he was honored to have the Saints playing for him and said the announcement has already lifted the spirits of many of those on the company’s board of directors. “It’s quite an honor to have a team like the New Orleans Saints, the Super Bowl champs, dedicating their season to us,” Hayward said. “It will definitely brighten things up here at BP. It will definitely give us a little something to take our minds off the stuff that’s been going on lately. I can’t tell you it’s going to solve our problems, but it will ease the pain a bit.” “I’ve always seen a lot of parallels between us and the people of New Orleans,” he added. “We both got hit with a massive catastrophe that was totally not our fault, we both had to clean it up with little help from the government, and we both had the New Orleans Saints pulling for us. The only real difference is that they didn’t have to do these bullshit press conference, so pardon me for thinking we have it a little worse.” Copyright 2010, The Brushback - Do not reprint without permission.
